European Integration Minister Meglena Kouneva will carry out a series of visits in Berlin and Frankfurt starting today (September 18).
Kouneva will meet with state secretary Reinhard Silderberg, European affairs department director Peter Tempel and European affairs adviser to the federal chancellor Uwe Corsepius. The main topic of discussion would be Bulgaria's upcoming EU entry and the final European Commission report on the country's readiness to join the union.
In Frankfurt, Kouneva will meet president of the state parliament of Hesse Norbert Kartmann; Kouneva will speak about the challenges Bulgaria faces shortly before its EU entry.
The UK will support fully Bulgaria’s EU entry on January 1 2007, parliamentary under secretary Baroness Ashton of Upholland said during a meeting with Interior Minister Roumen Petkov.
Petkov presented all measures undertaken to counter corruption and organised crime in the country. The ministry was working to meet the requirements of the European Commission, as well as of Bulgarian citizens, Petkov said.
The UK would be happy to work and co-operate with Bulgaria within the EU, once the country became member, Bulgaria has achieved a lot and the progress made was visible, Ashton said.
Petkov said that Bulgaria received significant UK aid and also received help in its attempts to harmonise local legislation with European.
